Overall Match & Sachin's Performance Analysis: South Africa's first officially blessed representative match in almost 22 years, first one-day international and first-ever game against India attracted a crowd widely claimed as beating the world record for a day's cricket of 90,800. However, Jagmohan Dalmiya, president of the Cricket Association of Bengal, said Eden Gardens now contained 90,452 seats and estimates putting the attendance higher included all the various officials, pressmen, policemen and peanut vendors.
This was Sachin Tendulkar’s 19th match and he got his 3rd Man of the Match award. South Africa playing their first match in 22 years got to a bad start losing 3 wickets for just 49 runs, before Keppler Wessels & Adrian Kuiper steadying the African ship with a 60 runs partnership. Just when the South Africans were finding their foot in the game, Sachin picked up the crucial wicket of Keppler Wessels for 50 thus slowing down their progress once again. The South African’s ended up scoring just 177 runs in their allotted 47 overs for the loss of 8 wickets. But the African lions were not going to take things lying down and came back with full vengeance. Allan “White Lightning” Donald who was making his international debut broke the back of the Indian top order with his deadly spell of first 4 overs reducing India to 20 for the loss of 3 wickets. Sachin Tendulkar who came when India was tottering at 3 for the loss of 2 wickets played a brilliant innings which included 8 boundaries and a six. He played sensibly along with Indian Captain Mohammed Azharuddin & debutant Pravin Amre adding crucial 40 and 56 runs for the 4th & 5th wicket respectively before Donald struck once again for the Proteas dismissing Tendulkar for an individual score of 62 runs from 73 balls. Donald was not finished yet and returned once again to remove Amre for 55 thus taking 5 wickets on debut but Sachin’s performance made sure that India won the match by 3 wickets remaining with 6.2 overs to spare.
Sachin Tendulkar & Allan Donald shared the Man of the Match award for the brilliant performance in a match which saw both teams fighting tooth & nail till the finish.Even in defeat, the South Africans were still overwhelmed by the occasion: I know how Neil Armstrong felt when he stood on the moon, said their captain Rice.

Trivia:

╠►South Africa was making a comeback into international cricket after 22 years of ban over its apartheid regime.

╠►11 players made their ODI debut in this match. PK Amre (India); SJ Cook, AA Donald, AC Hudson, PN Kirsten, AP Kuiper, BM McMillan, CEB Rice, DJ Richardson, TG Shaw and RP Snell (South Africa). The only South African player who had played international cricket before was Keppler Wessels. Interestingly he didn’t play those matches for South Africa but for Australia. Wessels who is South African by birth made in international debut with Australia in 1982 (Test against England) and 1983 (ODI against New Zealand) when South African was serving the ban from international cricket.

╠►Allan Donald took 5 wickets on his debut and shared the MoM award with Sachin Tendulkar.

╠► Sachin Tendulkar’s score of 62 was his 4th 50 in the 19 matches he played at that time and his highest score at that point.
